Trying to register for a luncheon or seminar and the system doesn't recognize you as a member? Don't do anything until you read this article!

There are two reasons the system does not recognize you as a member.

If you have recently become a PRSA member and have not created an online account through the PRSA Memphis website, complete with your member ID number provided by National, the system has no record of you as a member. The ID number is required. If you have attended PRSA events as a non-member, it will not automatically update your information once you become a member. The local website is not linked to National. Therefore, if you do not have an existing account, create one and include the member ID number. If you have a non-member account, please update it by putting your new member ID number into the system.

If you have been a member for some time and you try to register and get a message that states the system doesn't recognize you as a member, it is most likely because you have created more than one account. As a member, you should only have ONE account. Duplication will cause the system to deny member access and member prices. To rectify, all but one account will need to be deleted. Go to the Member directory and look up your name. It will show you how many accounts have been created under your name. Delete all but one, but make sure your member ID is listed in the account you maintain.

If you have further questions, please email Jamie Coggins, PRSA coordinator, at

The skills acquired through the process are applicable to any industry or practice area. Currently, more than 5,000 professionals from the agency, corporate, association and education fields hold the APR mark, Harold Burson and Daniel J. Edelman notable among them. Granting of APR is overseen by the Universal Accreditation Board.
Why APR?

Recognized Standard. Established in 1964, the Accreditation Program is the profession's only national post-graduate certification program. It measures a public relations practitioner's fundamental knowledge of communications theory and its application; establishes advanced capabilities in research, strategic planning, implementation and evaluation; and demonstrates a commitment to professional excellence and ethical conduct. Promotes Lifelong Learning. All APRs are required to complete continuing education programs, pursue volunteer work or pursue other professional development activities to keep their skills sharp and their Accredited status active.

Career Enhancement. Unlike other professional certifications, such as CPA, Accreditation in Public Relations is a voluntary demonstration of competency; as such, it reflects a strong commitment to the profession. Earning Accreditation also provides a distinction that can set individuals apart and open doors to career advancement and higher compensation.

Positive for Public Relations. Our profession is among the most misunderstood and criticized. Through their high professional and ethical standards, Accredited professionals contribute to greater understanding of public relations as a vital management function, and undermine those who would refer to our craft as spin, our professionals as flacks, and our currency as misrepresentation and disinformation.

Transforming the Cellular South brand to C Spire Wireless and the introduction of personalized wireless services

After successfully competing for nearly a quarter century in what is arguably the most competitive industry in the world, Cellular South, a wireless communications provider, made the bold and strategic decision to change its name to C Spire Wireless, rebrand itself and introduce an entirely new kind of wireless service called personalized wireless throughout its footprint. While Cellular South was a solid brand with strong consumer loyalty, company leaders realized the brand needed an overhaul to position itself for future growth, leverage its strengths as an industry leader and innovator and to stay competitive. In 2011, the company embarked on the historic journey to change its name, its brand and introduce personalized wireless, a combination of industry-first services and programs that offer a unique wireless experience that directly reflects and serves each customer's needs.

Lisa Flynt, marketing director for C Spire Wireless, will share the riveting story of the exhilarating, year-long journey to transform the brand and position the nation's largest privately held wireless communications company for future growth and success at the PRSA Memphis chapter 's monthly luncheon meeting on March 14. Flynt will discuss the company's brand development process, its work with Lippincott, a world renowned brand and image expert, the name change process, creating a new visual identity, implementation and communication of the new brand and how its decision to implement personalized wireless services was born out of the rebranding effort.

Flynt, who holds an undergraduate in marketing and MBA from Ole Miss, oversees strategic development, marketing and advertising for C Spire. Before joining the company in 2006, Flynt developed brands and strategic marketing campaigns on the client-side and as a consultant for 15 years.

The luncheon will be held at the Holiday Inn-University of Memphis, 3700 Central Ave. Registration is free for members. Non-members are $25. Students are $15. To register, click here
Implementing a Social Media policy for your organization

Public Relations practitioners and professional communicators are charged with shaping their organization's image, influencing opinions about their clients and products, and managing their brands. With the emergence of social media, never before in the history of the PR profession have there been so many versatile and innovative tools available to accomplish these tasks.

But with that opportunity comes risk. Social media has created an environment in which employees of organizations -- from C-suite executives to receptionists -- have access to media and audiences like never before. Consequently, now more than ever, the same tools that help PR professionals do their jobs more effectively also empower their organizations' employees to wield significant influence over their employers' brands and reputations.

University of Memphis graduate student Brittney Block will speak to the PRSA Memphis Chapter Feb. 9 at the chapter's monthly luncheon. She will discuss her body of research into the issue of implementing a social media policy for an organization's employees. Her presentation will cover the importance of such a policy, the elements that make up a sound social media policy, the reasons why every organization needs one, and the building blocks that are necessary for it to be successful.

Brittney received her B.A. summa cum laude in journalism with a concentration in advertising from The University of Memphis in 2010. During her undergraduate career, she worked on campaigns for three national brands, including State Farm, KFC, and Ford. She was also awarded the university's Outstanding Advertising Student award for 2010 and 2011. Currently, she is a graduate student at The University of Memphis, pursuing an M.A. in journalism with a concentration in integrated communications. She aspires to work in the industry upon graduation and then pursue a Ph.D.
